‘We Won’t Get Deported. The Jewish Resistance Fighters in Będzin and Sosnowiec’ edited by Tomek Grząślewicz and Karolina Jakoweńko is a bilingual (Polish and English) publication prepared on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the liquidation of the Zagłębie ghettos. The collective work consists of richly illustrated, supplemented with historical and source texts, 170 biographies of female and male fighters, and activists of the Jewish Combat Organization and other youth organizations (Haszomer Hatzair, Hanoar Hacijoni, Dror, Gordonia), operating in the Zagłębie Dąbrowskie, which before the outbreak of World War II, it was one of the largest Jewish communities in the Second Polish Republic. The authors, using widely unknown witness accounts, recall the stories of heroic young people from 80 years ago and give them a voice.
‘We Won’t Get Deported, the title of our book, is a quote from the unique Diaries written by fighter Chajka Klinger in 1943-1944. We dedicate is to all heroines and heroes referred to in this publication, and to all the others whom we didn’t find any information about. Let their memory live among the generations to come and inspire other people to oppose the Evil, which never goes away for good.
The book is a result of the activities undertaken in 2023 by Fundacja Brama Cukermana with other institutions and organizations to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the liquidation of the ghettos in Będzin-Kamionka and Sosnowiec-Środula. The year 1943 marked both the symbolic and actual end to the existence of large Jewish communities in Zagłębie Dąbrowskie’ – from the introduction by Karolina and Piotr Jakoweńko. The book was co-financed by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage from the Cultural Promotion Fund – a state special purpose fund and the Association of the Jewish Historical Institute in Poland.
